When it comes to the subject of Slavery, Liberals on the Left love to play a vicious game in which they control what is said about slavery, what is thought about slavery and especially how its historically portrayed.
This puts those of us on the Right, in a no win situation if we continue to let ourselves fall prey to a false premise that doesn’t allow truth to either creep in or as I prefer, explode into the conversation.
However, in this instance Gov Haley Barbour is willing to engage on an issue most Republicans shy away from.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) might have gotten the exactly the help he didn't need from a friend this morning, as Republican Governors Association chairman Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R-Miss.) defended him for issuing a proclamation in honor of Confederate History Month that did not include reference to slavery.On CNN's "State of the Union," Barbour said people already know slavery was a bad thing and that the outcry over McDonnell's proclamation amounted to making "a big deal out of something that doesn't amount to diddly."
Barbour's main point was that Mississippi's own Democratic-controlled state legislature has adopted similar resolutions in honor of Confederate soldiers, as have Mississippi governors of both parties. Asked by anchor Candy Crowley if McDonnell's resolution was a mistake, Barbour said, "I don't think so."
"I don't know what you would say about slavery, but anybody that thinks that you have to explain to people that slavery is a bad thing--I think that goes without saying," he said, adding "Maybe they should talk to my Democratic legislature, which has done the exactly same thing in Mississippi for years...I'm unaware of them being criticized for it."

Excellent point made by Gov Barbour. It’s only a controversy when Republicans are involved.
Republicans have to finally get a backbone when it comes to the history of their own party and remind people that they are the party that freed the slaves when Democrats wanted to continue the practice, that it was the Democrats who wanted to continue Segregation, and it was the Democrats who filibuster Civil Rights legislation.
For far too long Republicans have allowed themselves to lose this rhetorical battle because they are so timid and afraid of Democrats pulling the race card on them.
Memo to the GOP!
Democrats will pull out the race anyway, at anytime, in any fashion, and faster than Barack Obama threw his grandmother under the bus by calling her a “typical white person”.
So you might as well buck up, stand up for your history and don’t be afraid to point out the true history of the Democrats, the original enslavers of Blacks.
