An argument over a street side parking spot landed a man in handcuffs after he nearly bit another man's ear off during a fight, authorities said.
Enrique Ricardo Martinez, 48, was arrested and booked on suspicion of mayhem Friday, said Cmdr. Larry Coleman of the Santa Ana Police Department.
The man he bit, Gustavo Garcia, 45, was waiting at St. Joseph Hospital of Orange for a plastic surgeon to evaluate his ear.
The melee began just before 6 p.m. Friday when Martinez came home to his rented house on the 1600 block of W. 12th Street to find his usual parking spot taken by another car, Coleman said. Two men were helping to repair Martinez's landlord's car and had parked their own car partially in Martinez's spot on the street, the commander said.
Instead of taking another spot on the street, Martinez tried to fit his van into the small spot behind the other car, Coleman said. But the van bumped into the other car, he said.
The owner of the car asked Martinez what he was doing and Martinez began arguing and hitting the owner of the car, Coleman said.
Garcia intervened, trying to break up the fight, but Martinez turned on him, punching him, the commander said. They ended up on the ground, with Martinez punching and biting Garcia's left ear, Coleman said.
Witnesses tried to break up the fight, but Garcia's ear was left hanging from his head after Martinez was pulled off him, Coleman said.
According to Orange County court records, Martinez was sentenced to a drug diversion program and sentenced to three years' probation after pleading guilty in a drug-related case in 2001.
It was not immediately clear whether surgeons would be able to reattach Garcia's ear.
Ricardo better be thankful he doesn't live in Arizona!
