Shark kills body boarder (Lucas Ransom) in California waters

The UK Telegraph reports that authorities said the victim of a deadly shark attack in central California was a body boarder whose leg was bitten off.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown told the Lompoc Record that the man was attacked on Friday morning at Surf Beach. Mr Brown said a friend on a surfboard got him to shore but the man bled to death.

The University of California, Santa Barbara, identified the man as a student, 19-year-old Lucas Ransom from Romoland in Riverside County.

Surf Beach is on the property of Vandenberg Air Force Base but is open to the public.

Vandenberg says the base closed the beach and two others through the weekend.

There have been nearly 100 shark attacks in California since the 1920s, including a dozen that were fatal, according to the California Department of Fish and Game. But attacks have remained relatively rare even as the population of swimmers, divers and surfers sharing the waters has soared.
