Media Unspin: Hosni Mubarack’s military regime is still in control in Egypt

The news came down today that Hosni Mubarack has resigned as president of Egypt and has turned control of Egypt to the military.

Egyptians are dancing in the streets, honking their car horns and the American media is breathless in their coverage of democracy breaking out in the land of the Pyramids.

However, I’m very skeptical as to what really is happening.

What happens next?

Is this a genuine push toward freedom or is this a ruse to another form of the same military dictatorship?

If Egypt emerges as a stable democracy then where did the Egyptians get their inspiration to face down Mubarack? Some may say the events in Tunisia ousting their dictator had something to do with it. But, that would be only a partial examination for the truth. President George W. Bush argued very forcefully that once the seeds of democracy and freedom took hold in the Middle East, then the fires of liberty would spread throughout the region.

Could this be what we’re seeing?

The American media seems more willing to fixate on the template that all this democracy-seeking erupted out of thin air. That is a bunch of foolishness.

All this euphoria may lead to more instability in Egypt if Egypt trends towards anti-Americanism. This is the kind of information that in not part of the American media’s template.

So far, none of us know what the future holds in Egypt and the American media does a lot more spinning than sober reporting and analysis.
